The Auckland Free Public Library opened in the Mechanics' Institute buildings on 7 September 1880. It was free to all to enter and use the library's resources on the premises.

On 26 March 1887 the library was opened in new premises at the corner of Wellesley Street East and Kitchener Street, where the Auckland City Art Gallery is now located. The lending section was opened on 1 October 1889 for subscribers.

The Central City Library moved to its present site in 1971.

In November 2010 the Auckland Council formed, bringing together the former Auckland City, Franklin, Manukau, North Shore, Papakura, Rodney and Waitakere library systems. Auckland Libraries now has 54 branches across the city.
