Australia responded with 30 military advisers. Their arrival in South Vietnam in July 1962 was the beginning of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War. In August 1964 the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) also sent a flight of Caribou transports to the port town of Vung Tau.
The Ten Pound Pom scheme, which encouraged British citizens to emigrate to Australia for a fee of just ten pounds, officially ended in 1981. This program facilitated the migration of over a million people to Australia from the UK between its inception in 1945 and its conclusion.

Luke's father was a high ranking lieutenant in South Vietnam. When South Vietnam fell to North Vietnam, his father had to escape or face death. Luke's mother was pregnant with Luke at the time.
