DNA testing has been around since the mid-to-late 1980s, but it was not perfected until the mid-to-late 1990s.

The DNA tests for the O. J. Simpson case were the most famous early use of DNA evidence. Many people heard of DNA testing for the first time from the O. J. case, the verdict of which was decided in 1995.

In the early days, DNA testing was not nearly as sophisticated, and running the tests took a very, very long time. Nowadays, a DNA test can be run in a matter of minutes, but back then, it took weeks to get the results back.

DNA has been in living cells for hundreds of millions of years. It was first isolated by the Swiss physician Friedrich Miescher in 1869. Phoebus Levene identified the basic components in 1919. In 1928, discoveries by Frederick Griffith provided the first clear suggestion that DNA carried genetic information. James D. Watson and Francis Crick suggested what is now accepted as the first accurate model of DNA structure in 1953.

How do you get DNA testing done on a father living in MD when you live in NY?

Well it is not really a problem- the DNA testing company can send out to separate kits to 2 different addresses- the people particpanting in the tests are sometimes in different countries. The alleged father gets a kit and does his own sampling and sends them off to the lab for testing. The other tests participants do the same thing with the DNA test kit they receive. When all samples are at the lab, the DNA testing can begin.
