Esme turned into a vampire when she lost her first born and only real son she was so sad that she jumped off a cliff. Carlisle saw her dying and bit her and therefore become a vampire. This is told in Twilight, the 1st book of Stephenie Meyer's saga.

∙ 15y agoEsme Cullen jumped from a cliff (while human) after the death of her infant son. She was so close to death after her jump that she was taken straight to the morgue where Carlisle discovered her heart was still beating and chose to change her.
Esme was turned into a vampire by Carlisle, who found her near death after a suicide attempt and decided to save her by turning her into a vampire.
