Spain agreed to fund Christopher Columbus's voyage primarily to seek new trade routes to Asia and access lucrative spices and gold. The Spanish monarchy, especially Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, were motivated to enhance Spain's wealth and global influence, especially after the Reconquista. Columbus's promise of finding a westward route to the Indies presented an opportunity to outpace rival European nations in exploration and trade. Additionally, there was a desire to spread Christianity and expand Spain's territorial claims.
Spain agreed to sponsor Columbus's voyage to the New World primarily due to the desire to expand trade and gain access to new resources. After the Reconquista, Spain was eager to enhance its prestige and wealth through exploration. Columbus promised a direct route to Asia that would bypass existing trade routes controlled by rival powers. The potential for profitable trade in spices and gold ultimately persuaded King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to support his expedition.
Columbus promised a substantial amount of exotic spices, and other goods in exchange for support in his voyage.
Funny I learned this in school a few weeks ago. It was actually her and the king who approved his voyage. They first said no. Columbus asked again soon later. They said yes because they lost a lot of money (I forgot how) and thought he and other voyagers with him would find a lot of gold in their travels.
