GM never did turn into Chevy. Not technically anyway. Chevy is a part of GM. If you want an opinionated view, GM has ALWAYS pampered Chevy and in some aspects rammed them down people's throats. They are cheap knock offs of good cars. Buying a Chevy has always been like going to the store and buying store brand. They were typically stripped down and if you wanted the good stuff it was an option. They have always controlled the other divisions of GM. Case in point....the Corvette. Any time a vehicle was produced that would compete or maybe even outrun that over priced piece of junk, GM cut the legs out from under them. Always making sure the HP figures stayed low enough even if it meant de-tuning engines or forbidding use of certain performance packages in anything but that precious Vette. This dates as far back as the 60s when they started banning any other divisions of using Tri-Power....stating it could only be used on the Vette. It was never used after that period....not even on the Vette. The engines used in the Camaro/Firebird from the 80s on is the same engine used in the Vette....but de-tuned. So it is easy to think that GM is Chevy. But in the technical sense, it's not. This is, of course, an opinion and I'm sure there are die hard Chevy people that will chime in about this.
