Washington's portrait didn't appear on federally-issued $1 bills until 1869, and the current portrait wasn't adopted until the early 20th century, many decades after his death. Washington was strongly opposed to the portraits of any president, living or dead, being used on American coins and currency. He felt that it was too reminiscent of way most monarchies show the portrait of a king or queen. His favored depiction of Miss Liberty was the norm on nearly all coins for nearly 6 decades. It wasn't until 1909 when the first presidential portrait was used on a coin, the familiar Lincoln cent.
