On February 20, 1962, NASA astronaut John Glenn flew the Friendship 7 mission becoming the third American in space and the first American to orbit the Earth circling the earth three times. In October 1998, Senator Glenn returned to space at the age of 77 aboard the space shuttle Discovery, making him the oldest person to fly in space.
