Probably the one that hit on 15th October 1987 - in which 18 people were killed. It was made famous by BBC weather presenter Michael Fish - who stated in his broadcast "...earlier today a woman phoned the BBC and asked if there was a hurricane coming. Well - don't worry, there isn't..." - A few hours later, the storm hit the UK !
The event usually known as The Great Storm. A hurricane swept across southern England and caused widespread damage. Thousands of trees were blown down and several people were killed. It was not so much that Michael Fish failed to predict the event, he actually reassured everyone that it would not happen. The previous evening during his BBC weather forecast, he said that a lady TV viewer had contacted the BBC and said she had heard there was a hurricane on the way. Fish just chuckled and said no, there was nothing at all to worry about, it was not coming anywhere near the UK.
