There are six American flags on the moon from the Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17 missions. Buzz Aldrin during the Apollo 11 mission placed the first flag on the moon.

The flags cost $5.50 USD each, and 5 of the 6 are still casting shadows. However, the material has likely degraded and the colors completely faded, so there would be thirteen white stripes as well as white stars.

I can help.... maybe! THe first flag to be left on the moon may not have been placed by Apollo 11 astronauts! (The first humans to land on the moon on July 20, 1969) A flag, or a form of it (as, an insgnia on the side of a spacecraft) may be on the moon on a Ranger unmanned probe (which crashed into the lunar surface, and which may or may not have survived, because of the severe force of impact!). A more 'survived flag' may be considered to be on the side of a Surveyor spacecraft which soft-landed on the moon. An example is the Surveyor spacecraft which soft-landed near the same site where Apollo 12 landeed about two years later. I am not sure if some of these unmanned probes might have carried actual flags, flag patches, or other flag representations. Some NASA missions might or might not have. Interestingly, Apollo 11 astronauts placed on the moon surface a medal(s) and/or other memorabilia to Soviet astronauts who lost their lives during the space program during before the Apollo 1 flight (show what good sports we were to remember these fallen 'foes'). I should have looked for which Ranger or Surveyor spacecraft the aforementioned were; I'll leave that to another space buff to correct me!

The first American flag to be placed on the moon was during the Apollo 11 mission. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin placed the flag too close to the Lunar Module and when the crew left the surface of the moon, the thrust of the engine push the flag over.
