Mandela only served one year he refused the second time. Eventually they won the battle to stop discrimination for the blacks, so i guess that he refused the second time because he didnt want to. Also in jail he spreaded the messegaes of discrimination.
Nelson Mandela stopped apartheid because he believed it was cruel to seperate the blacks from the whites. He wanted it to come to an end.

Nelson Mandela was arrested 5 August 1962 and released from prison 2 February 1990. Pro-apartheid South African president, P.W. Botha, had a stroke in 1989 and Botha's replacement, Frederik Willem de Klerk, freed Mandela. Botha had once offered Nelson Mandela release from jail in 1985, but only on the condition that Mandela would stop the armed conflict. Nelson Mandela chose to stay in prison as he believed it was the right thing to do in order to put an end to apartheid.
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was the first black South African President and fought to stop racism. He was imprisoned in 1962, convicted of sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government. He served 27 years in prison, released in 1990 and went on to become president of South Africa. He brought the plight of the black people from South Africa to light by being imprisoned for fighting apartheid, which divided black and white people in South Africa and kept them separate. The black people where 2nd class citizens in their own country to that of the white people. Mandela, together with the African National Congress, (which Mandela was president of) eventually broke apartheid. He died on December 5, 2013.
