Pompey and Caesar were drifting apart in their political beliefs and Pompey was taking the sides of men who detested Caesar. Pompey had also been married to Caesar's daughter to solidify their bonds, but when that marriage ended (I believe through the death of Caesar's daughter, Julia) their was nothing holding the two together.
