becuase! he is the first maori EVER to get a university degree , & he is on the 50 dollar note..
um i don't know???? Well I do: Apirana Ngata was one of the first Maori to get a University Degree. He dedicated his life to advocating for Maori and to getting Maori issues, culture and needs recognised amoungst the general New Zealand Population. Much of what Maori as a whole have aspired to can be contributed back to him.
Sir Maui Pomare was the first known Māori to graduate from a university, earning his medical degree from the University of Edinburgh in 1904.
Apirana Ngata was a extremely influencial New Zealander. He was the first Maori to complete a University Degree and later became a politician in order to represent Maori, who at the time were treated as second class citizens. He revived Maori culture and the Maori Language, which were both on the verge of 'extinction'. He is now immortalised on the New Zealand $50 note. His whakapapa is essentially his family tree and to Maori people this is an important aspect of what theys are. It sets out your bloodline and your ancestry. Apirana's Whakapapa is quite impressive and can be traced back to Maori Chiefs from the Ngati Porou tribes.

My list would include Truby King, founder of Plunket Society; Edmund Hillary, mountaineer; Ernest Rutherford, scientist; Colin Meads, footballer; Colin McCahon, artist; Kiri te Kanawa, singer; Apirana Ngata, prominent in Maori education and NZ's first Maori graduate.
