Stephen Hillenburg started with Nickelodeon as a writer and director of the animated series Rocko's Modern Life, which premiered in September 1993, lasted four seasons, and in my humble opinion is at least as entertaining as SpongeBob SquarePants. He also worked on Rocko's Modern Life as a storyboard artist during the second and third seasons and as a creative producer during the last season. (That was a hoot!)

In May of 1999, two years after the finalé of Rocko's Modern Life, Spongebob Squarepants premiered. Spongebob Squarepants was created by Mr. Hillenburg, its characters were developed by him, and he wrote the theme song. (If nautical nonsense be something you wish, then drop on the deck and blub like a fish!) From the start, he has been, and continues to be, the show's Executive Producer.
