Lewis had been Jefferson's personal secretary (today we would call him a "personal assistant") prior to the Louisiana Purchase. Lewis was well known for being an outdoorsman and military leader, which were qualities needed for such a task as exploring the territory. Jefferson had to choose someone who had the ability, qualifications, and tenacity to travel into the unknown, as there were no maps of the territory. Lewis was an obviously good choice because of the group of men he assembled to go on this mission, they lost only one. One member died of appendicitis during the two year, 4000 mile journey. Such success can only be attributed to the leadership skills of Capt. Meriwether Lewis.
Alexander Hamilton was George Washington's Secretary of Treasury from 1789 to 1795. Albert Gallatin was the Secretary of Treasury under Thomas Jefferson. Secretary Gallatin convinced President Jefferson that they should run their administration based on Hamilton's financial and economic programs.
