He accused people of being a witch and then put them on a trial and if they were still thought of as a witch they were hung
They didn't. Witchcraft was considered hubris, though this did not stop some people from practicing it in secret. Much of what is today "magic(k)" is in fact loosely based on a variety of sources, including Hellenic elements (often quite erroneously).
Between June and September, in 1692, in Salem Mass, 19 people were hung on the charge of Witchcraft. They were accused of Witchcraft. They were not the ones that did the accusing. Giles Corey was pressed death by stones for not pleading guilty to the charge of Witchcraft. Other people died while imprisoned.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry re-opens on the 1st of September every year.

People who confessed to Witchcraft were punished. They were burned alive or hung. The people who would not confess were tortured until they confessed or until they died.
The Church said it was evil, so it was suppressed, but it was never completely obliterated.
