The actual year is not known, but probably about 140 - 216 AD, during the career of Aelius Galenus, aka Claudius Galenus or Galen of Pergamon, a Greek doctor working in Rome. His interest in the circulatory system, his near obsession with accurate diagnosis, and his emphasis on detailed observations of his patients symptoms may well have led him to use pulse rate as a diagnostic tool.
