The first state to make slavery illegal in the U.S. was Rhode Island.
It was Pennsylvania, which passed a law to make slavery illegal in 1780. Three years later, in 1783, two other states-- New Hampshire and Massachusetts-- passed similar laws. Connecticut and Rhode Island then outlawed slavery in 1784.
Probably the same reason we had slavery everywhere else..... it was cheap labor. And it was legal. oh and also because people thought they could take advantageof the poor people and make them slaves because their masters were more rich than the slaves.
