Scientists didn't knew ozone layer before 1880. It is because of lack of technology at that time.

The effect of the ozone layer, is to absorb UV-B radiation from our Sun, and prevent it from reaching the Earth's surface.

We can directly monitor UV-B radiation now. We can measure the amount of ozone along any vertical path by using satellites. We can analyze how UV-B radiation likely affected long-lived species (such as trees). We can monitor the size of the ozone hole, which indicates overall levels of ozone scavengers in the atmosphere.

Short term measurements recorded annual variations of ozone concentrations. Short term measurements showed the largest ozone hole over Antarctica detected recently (2006).

Long term estimations show either an effect of decreasing ozone, a depressing effect of increasing drought, or both.

Observations of ozone scavengers have increased. Noctilucent clouds had not been seen until the end of the 1800s (water vapor reduces ozone concentrations).

Detections of chlorine and CFCs in the "ozone hole" had increased from near non-detect (and we just recently learned to look for it, so hold your judgment on this).

The ozone layer is self-repairing. It appears that Man has had a hand in reducing the concentration of ozone world-wide. We reached a record ozone hole size just three years ago, and have been close to that size the following two years. So we may be turning around, we may have found and controlled all the things we do that damage ozone (or ozone production), or it may just be a dip.

It isn't exactly evaporating...but it is thinning. Contaminants cause the ozone layer to become thinner and thinner, where harmful UV-B rays can reach Earth's surface unhindered. Basically the UV-B rays can sterilize the surface of our planet and its oceans.

Ozone depletion itself has been a theory since the early 1970's. Frank Rowland and Mario Molina (UC Irvine) created the Rowland-Molina hypothesis which states chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) deplete the atmosphere as fast as N2O. They found that CFC's from the 30's were still in the atmosphere while they were on a crusie around the South Pole.

British Antarctic scientists Farmin, Gardiner, and Shanklin discovered the actual hole in the Ozone in 1984 and published their findings in Nature in May of 1985.

What year do scientists think the ozone layer will have rebound?

Scientists hope the ozone layer will have recovered by around 2050.

Is there any improvement of ozone layer in recent year?

Yes, there is. Ozone layer is replenishing.

In 1985 was there a hole in the ozone layer?

The ozone layer is the portion of the atmosphere that filters out most of the dangerous UV waves that hit the Earth from the sun. In 1985, scientists discovered a very large hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica.

How big was the hole in the ozone layer in 1880?

There is no way of knowing. We did not discover the recurring ozone hole until the late 1900s.

When was the massive hole in the ozone layer over the Antarctica first discovered?

The ozone hole first appeared when the ozone layer first appeared. The only variable is the "size" of the hole, and the ozone concentration in the "hole". The pole of the Earth that is experiencing winter receives none of the UV that makes ozone (for like a month or more), and ozone naturally decays with time. TThe ozone hole is a normal feature of our ozone layer. It appears each year when it is winter at one of our poles. So it first appeared when the ozone layer appeared. We first noticed the ozone hole in 1985, above Antartica. One forms over the Arctic pole too when it is winter there. They heal closed again once sunlight reaches the pole. Its not so much the presence or absence of an ozone hole, but its size that is important. It is important to look out for the ozone hole

When was the ozone layer discoverd?

The ozone layer was discovered in the year 1913 by the scientists Charles Fabry and Henry Buisson.

In what year do scientists believe that the hole in the Ozone Layer over Antarctica first appeared?

Right after the Great Oxidation Event, when the ozone layer first formed. About 500 million years ago.

When did scientists find a hole in the ozone layer?

The ozone layer was discovered in the year 1985. During that period large amount of CFC's were used without knowing the adverse effect of these fatal chemicals. In 1985 scientists discovered that appreciable thinning of ozone layer is happening over the antarctic region. And thus steps for its recovery were made into action.

In which year was the ozone layer biggest?

The ozone layer covers the entire planet twice a year, every year. That is when it is biggest.

Is there any improvement of ozone layer in recent year?

Yes, there is. Ozone layer is replenishing.

How fast is the ozone layer growing each year and why?

The ozone layer is growing slow. This is due to ozone depletion by CFC's.

Has size of the hole in the ozone layer changed in recent year?

Yes, it has. Size of ozone layer changes according to the use of CFC's.

What is the size of the ozon layer this year of 2008?

The size of ozone layer in year 2008 was moderate. It was recovering.

Why hasn't the ozone layer repaired itself fully since the ban?

CFCs, the chlorofluorocarbon gases that destroy the ozone, remain active in the atmosphere for 50 to 75 years. The chlorine molecule that detaches from the CFC to attack the ozone emerges from the encounter unscathed and lives to fight another day.CFCs also take about ten years to rise up to the lower stratosphere, where the ozone layer is.All these reasons are why scientists hope that the ozone layer will have repaired itself fully by the year 2060.
