The earliest ones was minor ones which was in 1938. They were used until the end of the war in 1945. The exact number is disputed from 1,200 to over 15,000.
Actually the first evidence of "Concentration Camps" called as such, was during the Boer War during the years 1900-1902. They were officially called that in documents Lord Kitchener signed.

By 1942, the Germans had built 6 death camps. Some of theses death camps were Auschwitz, Belzec, Chelmno, Majdanek, Sobibor, and T.II. Some other Concentration camps were Bergen-Belsen, Buchenwald, Dachau, Sachsenhausen, Treblinka, and Theresienstadt. These camps were forced work camps and not killing camps. The worst death camp out of them all was Auschwitz.

The national socialists experimennted with several gasses but the most deadly (and infamous) was Zyklon B, the main component of which was hydrogen cyanide (prussic acid).
After the war, and the survivors of the Concentration Camps were sent to England and the United States, A War Crime Commission was formed to find out those German soldiers who were involved in killing the Jews including the babies who were confined in the concentration Camps and committed war crimes against them. War crimes were medically testing using humans, including children, as guinea pigs for surgical solutions.

Hitler was using propaganda on the germans, so some did believe in hitler and his ideal's about the Jews also, this was quite impowering to hitler because, once hitler got majority of germans on his side, he could proceed his plans 2.
