The most well known works of Homer, the Iliad and The Odyssey were dated at 750 B.C. -725 B.C. There is evidence that Greek polytheism (Hellenismos) is yet older than that, but no one is certain exactly how old as there is not yet a fixed date.
The Greeks did not invent pizza.
He was originally on the Greeks side. He and the other gods tried to over throw Zeus. He was caught, but escaped. For Poseidon's and Ares punishment, they were forced to 1 year of labor to the Trojans. The king promised to pay them much money, but refused after their labor. Poseidon then sided with the Greeks and sent a vicious sea monster on the Trojans.
The ancient Greeks did not have calendars for the year of the birth of their god.
The earliest evidence of human presence in the Balkans, dated to 250,000 BC, is to be found in the northern Greek province of Macedonia.
Dionysus is a Very cool God. He is the son of Zeus and a mortal woman named Semele. He is the youngest of the Gods and the only main God to have a mortal parent. He and Hermes replaced the Gods Hades and Hestia as main Greek Gods. He was raised in Asia, and is said to be insane. He is also the God of wine and partying. He is a major God in everyday life for the Greeks, there is a large party once a year for him.
Greeks would pick a god that was a patron of their trade or hobbies. A farmer would pay homage to Demeter, a hunter would pray to Artemis, a blacksmith to Hephaestus, a warrior to Ares, a scholar to Athena, a mother to Hera, or a wine maker would worship Dionysus. Also certain times of the year would demand a sacrifice to certain gods.

In the year 391 AD all worship of the Roman gods was baned.
The Mesopotamians were the first civilization, so therefore, they "came up" with the first religion. The Mesopotamians were polytheistic, which means they worshipped many gods. The gods the Mesopotamians worshipped were based on the natural happenings, their harvest's, hurricanes, and they loved (especially) one god that they claimed "made" the Tigris and Euphrates rivers flood in the summertime every year, so the crops were extra rich from the silt in the water, which came from the mountains.
Their were many different festivals scattered around the year honoring all the gods. One of the most famous and mysterious ones was the festival of Demeter.
Technically, before mankind first conceived of gods, there had been nothing but atheism. So, atheism has always existed. The ancient Greeks first coined the phrase. The first self-identified atheists appeared in the 18th century.

They probably didn't spend "so much time" when you compare them to us today and our view of how much is appropriate and the Greeks and their view. The ancient Greeks spent an appropriate amount of time (to their minds) building temples and worshipping their gods. They, after all, had a lot of gods to keep happy and had a lot of free slave labour to do the work. Keep in mind that the Greek gods really didn't care about the people as the present Judeo-Christian god is thought to do. You had to do a lot of work to get their praise and attention, and avoid their wrath. As far as the Greeks being excessive, the christian cathedrals and churches of Europe and the Americas are certainly numerous and opulent (e.g. The Vatican) and the mosques of Islamic countries and the Americas are in large numbers and just as well appointed. As far as devoting excessive time to worship, the whole economy of Christendom used to drag to a halt at least one day a week for sure and for dozens of special celebrations like Easter and Christmas every year. In Muslim countries there are calls to prayer five times a day that stop all activity - business and otherwise - and the observation of the Eids causes massive changes in lifestyle.
