According to historians, President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in the fall of 1863 after Sarah Hale sent letters to him concerning the significance of the first thanksgiving event.
October 3, 1789 was the date on which first U.S. President George Washington [February 22, 1732-December 14, 1799] proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving. He identified that day as November 26th. The holiday continued to be observed, but not on a national level. Its observance tended to be in New England. But the date varied widely, from sometime in October to sometime in January.
Because there is another question relating to Thanksgiving which leaves out significant information, I shall answer this one. Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday by Abraham Lincoln during his first term of office. Radical Republicans were Protestants. Thanksgiving was a Protestant feast day. Lincoln appeased his Republican allies by declaring the day a US Holiday.
The busiest holiday travel days of the year are typically the day before Thanksgiving, the Friday after Thanksgiving, and the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
