Although it may have been claimed at a prior date, the first recorded successful climb of Aconcagua took place on January 14, 1897 by Matthias Zurbriggen.
The first three climbers reached the highest point of Aconcagua (6962 m ASL) in early 1897. On a European team led by Edward FitzGerald, Swiss climber and guide Matthias Zurbriggen was the first to summit on January 14, 1897, followed by a dual ascent by Stuart Vines and Nicola Lanti on February 13, 1897.
