The gold rush of 1849
Gold was found in 1848 and the people who went there the following year were referred to as '49ers'
People were called 49ers b/c the gold rush happened in 1849, sum 80,000 people migrating to California in search of gold. People in fewer numbers also migrated in 1848, they were called 48ers.
Some may have come earlier, but the gold rush of 1849 is recorded as the first time.
the klondike gold rush is the main name and they found gold 1896 but the actual rush began 1897
