Amerigo Vespucci, he believed he had found a "new world". Later a German mapmaker labeled the new continents America in honor of Vespucci.
The were named after Amerigo Vespucci. He proved that the Americas weren't Asia, but a separate land mass. Mapmakers then named the "New World" after the first person to figure out that Columbus was wrong - Amerigo Vespucci.
