There wasn't a wrangler model 1996. If it has square headlights then its a 1995 and it is a YJ which is not compatible with a 2001. If it has round headlights then its a 1997 and its a TJ which is compatible with a 2001
Al YJ's are compatible, 89-95
Yes
Yes, they are both TJ's and it should be a match.
No, that should not work
No it won't -different soft tops & dimensions for the TJ (2001) vs the YJ (1995)
It should not work, yoursi s a TJ, and the 93 is a yj
Use the adjustment bar between the top bows
They are just too different, you should get the correct top for your Jeep.
Any '97-'06 soft top will fit. However, a '97-'03 top will fit better and tighter since it's specifically made for your year model Jeep. As for brands, any will do just fine. Bestop is nice but somewhat pricy (you get what you pay for). Some more affordable brands are Rugged Ridge, Pavement Ends, etc. Some tops require different soft top frames though. Read all the details ahead of time so you won't be stuck with a top but no hardware to make it fit right.
The Wrangler X is a trim model below the Sport. Wrangler, X, Sport, Sahara, <insert specialty trim package here> i.e. Golden Eagle The Sport typically came with both soft and hard top, some Sahara available options and other minor trim differences.
If you are switching out all of the hardware/bracketry it will fit. If you are just installing the soft top you want to make sure that it is the right set up for your brackets. The problem is that most of these soft tops are replaced after five or so years and you never know what bracket set up they used or replaced. My suggestion to you would be to go to the quadratec.com website. They diagram this very nicely. There you can see what the stock soft top setup looks like, and if yours looks like this, then you will be able to put a stock 1998 Sahara top on it.
