FerdinandGarvrilo Princip assassinated the archduke. He also murdered the archduke's wife, Sophie. Which is pretty sad if you ask me. Not that the murder of the archduke isn't sad either.

The Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914 by a Serbian nationalist (who had a revolver).
Nineteen-year-old Gavrilo Princip shot Franz Ferdinand on June 28, 1914, while Ferdinand was traveling through Sarajevo, a city in Austria-Hungary. Princip was a member of the Black Hand (a Serbian terrorist organization). He shot Ferdinand in the throat and his wife Sophia in her stomach. Franz Ferdinand cried out, "Sopherl! Sopherl! Don't die! Keep alive for our children!"Princip swallowed poison, but the poison failed and he was caught by an angry crowd and beaten. He was then transported to a Theresienstadt prison in Austria to serve a 20 year sentence. Two years into his sentence, he died of tuberculosis.Ferdinand

Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnia Serb protesting Austrian imperial rule, killed Archduke Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, on June the 28th of 1914. Within a month, Princip's actions led to the start of the First World War.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was killed on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo by a nineteen-year-old Serbian nationalist named Gavrilo Princip. The assassination itself was coordinated by Danilo Ilić, a member of the Black Hand, a secret society with the primary goal of unification of the Slavic nations. Princip was actually a last resort to assassinated the Archduke. Nedeljko Čabrinović, who was to bomb the Archduke's motorcade, but failed to do so.
