George Washington's portrait first appeared on the 1869 series of $1 United States Notes.

In 1886 new bills with his wife's picture were issued, and ten years later another series was printed featuring both Washingtons.

Washington returned alone to the $1 bill in 1918, but in a small portrait to one side of the bill.

In 1923 a large, centered portrait similar to the one on current bills was adopted. It's been used since then, with modifications only to the surrounding design and different seal colors.

For various political reasons Congress refuses to allow the $1 bill to be further redesigned.
