Jewish leaders were granted autonomy over a portion of land by an affirmative
majority vote of the UN General Assembly in November, 1947. They declared the
sovereign state of Israel in May, 1948. At that point, Israel was independent, and
there was no war to make it so.
The event was deemed a catastrophe (small 'c') by Israel's neighbors, who welcomed
the new nation into the community of nations with a united invasion by their massed
armies. The subsequent war was one of survival on the part of Israel, and succeeded
in its purpose.
