J.C.Higgins Model 31 years and More!I bought one from Sears in 1955. Probably available a couple of years before that and I think I saw them for sale until around 1959. Very nice looking rifle with some of the design appearance of the M1 carbine and rifle. No serial numbering. Was gas operated with a large tubular magazine that could be loaded interchangeably with shorts, longs, and long rifles. Poor cycling on shorts however. Came with a 4 power sears scope, very bright and adequate to maybe 75 yards. Had an unusual ( and rotten ) built in sling which unreeled from the stock and twisted onto what looked a little like a bayonet mount. After carrying it slung for a while the sling fastener would invariably untwist and the end of the barrel would instantly become full of mud. Being 16 I screwed on an old military sling that of course really worked but visually overwhelmed the rifle. 16 year old hunters didn't seem to think about such things in those days.
