H. L. Mencken wrote a hoax column in 1917, about how Millard Fillmore's only great achievement was adding a plumbed bathtub to the White House. The entire story was a hoax. The story found its way into encyclopedias, histories of the bathtub, and political lore. The White House Library was created while Millard Fillmore was in office. His wife, Abigail Fillmore, led the push for a White House Library.
His daughter Mary Abigail who was 18 when he took office was with him and served as a hostess at the White House when Mrs. Fillmore was ill, as was often the case.
