It was named for Admiral Sir William Penn the father of the Colony's Founder William Penn by King Charles II. Admiral Penn was a member of the Church of England and it was his son that became a Quaker at the age of 22.
William Penn married Guliehna Maria Springett, in 1672. They were married for approximately 22 years, when Guliehna died, in 1694. In 1696, Penn married Hannah Callowhill . William Penn and Hannah Callowhill Penn remained married until Penn's death, in 1718.
