The first human-made plastic was invented by Alexander Parkes in 1862; he called this plastic "Parkesine." The first plastic based on a synthetic polymer was made from phenol and formaldehyde, with the first viable and cheap synthesis methods invented in 1909 by Leo Hendrik Baekeland.
Plastic was invented in 1855 and was put into public and commercial use in 1862.

Polystyrene existed as early as 1830 but it was very brittle at the time and never found commercial use so I don't know if that counts. Parksine wasdevelopedin the 1850s and should qualify because it became quite a commercial success as it replaced ivory as the prominent material for billiard balls. However some don't counts that either because it is not completely synthetic. Bakelite hit the scene in the early 1900s and was a full synthetic with commercial success (it was every electrical outlet and light switch for decades) but some don't count this because it was a thermoset and could not be remelted like most things that we call "plastic". If none of the above fit the bill you'd have to look to the 1920s for a material that isindisputably"plastic"
Plastic products were first manufactured in 1868 when John Wesley Hyatt invented celluloid in order to replace the ivory component necessary in billiard balls.
