Sutter's fort was built by John Sutter in 1839 in Mexican Alta California and called it New Helvetia. After gold was found in his sawmill in 1848 the fort was abandoned, but today the state of California department of parks and recreation has the restored fort open for visitors.

Sutter's fort is still standing and it never did "fall." No battles took place at the fort. It was built for people who came to CA to settle. Today, it is a state park and you can tour the fort.
