There has never been a 12th planet. Back in the 1990's, when telescopes were getting MUCH better, astronomers discovered several objects out beyond the orbit of the planet Pluto, and there was some competition as to which team would get credit for discovering the "Tenth Planet". But the International Astronomical Union intervened and came up with a new definition of "planet" that excluded not only all of the new candidates, but also the 9th planet Pluto. So these objects were redesignated as "minor planets".
