The Grand Concourse, one of the grand boulevards of New York, was designed in 1892 by Louis Risse as the "Speedway Concourse," to provide access from Manhattan to the large parks of the Bronx. It was built as California Speedway by Penske Speedways because it was felt there was a strong audience for racing in southern California.

France to Alabama Governor George Wallace and as a speedway to both expand the empire of International Speedway Corporation and also to serve as an alternate to Daytona Int'l Speedway, which at the time was becoming a source of controversy in Daytona Beach because of tax deals made to the speedway when it was built that some local politicians in Daytona wanted to change - France Sr. wanted a speedway to hold races in case he felt the need to close down Daytona.

While there was no NASCAR speedway built in a single year Both Kansas and Chicagoland speedways opened in 2001. They both started construction in 1999. Kansas had there first race in spring of 2001 and Chicagoland finish construction in spring of 2001.

NASCAR itself was founded after the Daytona Speedway was built. Bill France's coterie of auto racers raced on the sands of Daytona Beach before moving to the speedway.
