The first airplane flight was in one of George Cayley's gliders in 1853 at Bromton Dale. German engineer and inventor (25 patents) Otto Lilienthal would later write the seminal Birdflight as the Basis of Aviation in 1889 and developed what would become the hang gliders we see today. Orville and Wilbur Wright cited his work as the inspiration for thier interest in manned flight.

The Wright brothers are credited with the first powered, controlled, sustained heavier-than-air flight at the end of 1903, but they may have been preceded nine months by a recluse New Zealand farmer named Richard Pearse. Unlike the Wrights' plane, his monoplane aircraft with its moveable control surfaces was much more recognizable as a progenitor of modern aircraft. Reconstructions of his craft and his engines showed that his designs were sound and there's no reason they shouldn't have gotten the pilot airborne, despite the lack of foils for wings.

In the late 1700s, George Cayley designed some similarly aerodynamically sound lifting surfaces around inclined planes rather than the more efficient foils we use today.

The airplane wasn't an invention as much as an innovation. There is no single person nor people who can be credited with creating the airplanes of today. Like any innovation it took a succession of gifted minds and their drive and dedication, continually improving on work done by others.
