Response: The first case of autism was diagnosed in the united states in 1942.
Response: The word "autism" was used in descriptions of schizophrenia as early as 1910 by Eugen Bleuler, but it did not refer to the modern description of autism. Leo Kanner (1894-1981) wrote a paper, "Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact", in 1943 in which he used the word "autism" in its modern sense. Before that time, the condition now known as autism was called by other names (based on evaluations of case studies of children from earlier periods, some of whom were labelled as "possessed").
The word autism was first coined in the year 1908. Official studies on children began in the year 1943.

No - no one can 'get rid' of autism. Autism is a neurological difference...the only way to 'get rid' of autism then would be to 'get rid' of a persons brain, which obviously isn't an option. Although autism can be a disability for many it can also be an advantage to many, even if a 2 year old is severely affected by their autism they may improve over time.

More and more research is finding that autism has a brain chemistry component and is not due to parenting styles, upbringing or psychology. Autism is seen as a disorder that falls upon a spectrum and is a constellation of symptoms rather than having a single identifier. Children who appear to be developing normally seem to exhibit signs of autism by the second or third year of life.
