Currently Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May. It was a holiday included in the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill enacted and signed in 1968, becoming effective January 1, 1971. There currently is a movement to restore Memorial Day to its traditional date of May 30th.

Memorial Day was one of the holidays affected by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act enacted and signed into law on June 28, 1968. This Bill, reassigning certain holidays to a Monday to enable three-day weekends for federal employees, went into effect on January 1, 1971. Prior to 1971 Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, was observed on May 30th of every year.
It was signed into law in December 1941, to be in effect from 1942.

Alfred King. A store owner in Kansas, he campaigned to change Armistice Day into a day for all Veterans. Less than a year later, the bill made it through congress and was signed into law by Dwight Eisenhower.
On November 2, 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill proposed by Representative Nancy Hall of Indiana which created a federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was first observed on January 20, 1986.
