The Iberian Peninsula, including what is now known as Spain, was freed of Muslim influence in 1492.

Spain did not come into existence until 1516 when Carlos I inherited the monarchies of Castile, Leon, and Aragon unifying the core of modern Spain.

Since then Spain has always been a separate kingdom/country. Spain was occupied by France during the Napoleonic era but was never totally subjugated.

Spain was never dependant of a metropolis or similar. Spain was formed as a kingdom in the VI century, after the fall of the Roman Empire. There is a war (wrongly) called the independence war in 1808-12, but it was against the French and Napoleon, who kidnapped the Spanish king.

Spain was formed as a province of Rome. They gave Spain (Hispania) it's identity an unifyed it, with a common language (latin) and law (Roman law). After the fall of Rome, Spain was invaded by many barbarian peoples, like Suevian, Alans, Vandals and, at last, the Visigoths. The visigoths ruled most of Spain and defeated other german people. King Leovigildo (578) reunified all the Iberian Peninsula, but with a elite of arrian goths and a major population of hispano-roman catholics. His son Recaredo abjured arrianism and rejoined both people at the Third Council of Toledo, prepared by Saint Isidoro of Seville (the one who wrote the Laus Spania, a text with the many virtues of Spain).

With the moorish invasion the visigoth kingdom fell down in 711 AD, but there were some that resisted in the mountains of the north and, in 722, King Pelayo defeated the moors at Covadonga, starting the Reconquista of Spain, that lasted 8 centuries and gave Spain a strong identification with the catholic religion. When the Catholic Kings (Ferdinand and Isabella) ended up the Reconquista with the fall of Grenade at 1492, the Kingdom of Castille and Leon and The kingdom of Aragon were together in one crown: Navarra would join the after the death of Isabella, when the Castillians helped one of the sides in a civil war. They rejcted to call themselves "Kings of Spain" due to respect for the Portugal King, who considered hismself as well as a "spanish king". With Philip the Second Portugal came into the "hispanic monarchy", rejoining the so long lost Visigothic Kingdom of Toledo, in 1580.

Founded in VI century by king Recaredo.

Lost in 711 AD by king Don Rodrigo.

Reconquista started with King Don Pelayo in 722 AD.

Reconquista ended with Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic kings in 1492 AD.

Unified with Philip II "the Prudent king" in 1580, with the anexion of Portugal.
