His father was a Baptist preacher who was fiery and often quarrelsome, and so had to move frequently. The Arthurs moved seven times while Chester grew up, living in Vermont and New York. He had 6 sisters and a brother. He was taught at home by his father until he was about 12, when he entered the academy at Union Village, NY. At 15, he entered the Lyceum at Schenectady and was able to enter Union College as a sophomore a year later in 1845. At 18, he graduated for Union and was on his own.
