Canada has never issued a Halfpenny or half cent coin since Confederation.
Prior to Confederation, any Halfpenny coins circulating in what was to become Canada would have been British Halfpennies. British coins do not have the country name on them.
Until Confederation, private banks such as the Bank of Upper Canada and the Bank of Montreal, issued their own coins and some of the provinces such as New Brunswick and Nova Scotia issued their own coins.
All of these coins will indicate the origin of the coin.
Canadian Coins were originally minted in England, so all Canadian large cents dated from 1858 until 1907 were shipped from overseas. The Royal Canadian Mint opened in 1908 in Ottawa, allowing Canadian coinage to be minted at home.
Here's some information from the Royal Canadian Mint, where all our money is made:
Pennies: Since 2000 pennies have been 94% steel, 1.5% nickel, 4.5% copper plating. From 1997 until 2000, the coin was made of copper-plated zinc. Prior to 1997 the one-cent coin was 98% copper, 1.75% zinc and 0.25% other metals.
Any Canadian cent dated up through 1996 is primarily copper.
Dominion of Canada pennies were first minted in 1870. The earlier Province of Canada pennies were first minted in 1858.
They haven't been made large in Canada since 1920.
1860 The last copper pennies were made in England, and the same year the first bronze pennies were made.
Well depending if your talking about all the different country's pennies, then Im not sure. But I do know that the pennies made in Canada and the states are. The main metal in these pennies are copper, and copper is worth more then what the penny is worth, so sometime in the near future they will atop making pennies.
Of course! In the U.S., the first cents were made in 1793. In England, pennies date back to the Middle Ages.
It depends on which country we are talking about. For the US, there is only one magnetic coin the 1943 steel penny. For Canada, there have been some magnetic pennies made since 2000, though there were zinc pennies made until 2008. For the UK, pennies have been magnetic (copper plated steel) since 1992.
who was the first person in BC who made pennies
You will be lucky to get pennies for pennies in Canada. Try Ebay or a local metal dealer but I doubt they will give you a better deal than a local bank.
Pennies (or one cent coins) were not made of steel in 1965 in the United States (nor in Canada, Great Britain, Australia or New Zealand).
The U.S. still mints pennies, but Canada discontinued them in 2012.
Priceless. The first wheat pennies were made in 1909.
The US never made silver pennies. In 1943 the US made steel pennies. These are often mistaken for silver pennies.
