The Transcontinental Railroad began in San Francisco, California and ended in Council Bluff, Iowa. Three private railroad companies joined forces to make it happen. They were the Western Pacific Railroad, the Central Pacific Railroad of California and the Union Pacific Railroad Company.

The Central Pacific Railroad built the other part of the transcontinental railroad starting in Sacramento, California and built east meeting the Union Pacific Railroad.

The Federal government paid the two railroad companies that built it by granting them sections (one square mile) on alternating sides of any tracks that they built. The railroad companies could do whatever they wanted with this land and often sold it off. Many other western railroads were later funded the same way.
