There really aren't five main differences between a hub and a switch; the main difference is that a signal is repeated across all ports in a hub, and only to the specific port in a switch.

Simply put the difference is a hub connects all devices connected to it as IF they are on one cable. A switch treats all wired connection as seperate. The way computer communciations work mean that a computer has to wait for a quiet time before it can send data on the network. If all the computers are connected to a hub all of the computers "hear" the network traffic so it can take slightly longer to get quiet time. On a switch the only data travelling on the cable to each computer is data from that computer or data destined for that computer. This means that switches are faster. In the real world an 8-port hub is unlikely to feel much slower than a 8-port switch but in a business environment where you have 24 or even 48 port devices a switch will make a significant difference. If 2 computers attempt to "talk" at the same time on a network it is called a collision and both computers stop transmitting and wait a random time before they start to try again. Every computer connected to the a hub is in the same collision domain. With a switch all computers are in their own collision domain.

Hubs will re-transmit all information they receive through all their interfaces, except the interface where the information comes in.

In most cases, a switch will send the information only to the intended destination - other switch ports will not receive copies of the frame.
