Stitches may be necessary, but treatment for infection and or internal bleeding may be more significant.

Usually the stitches are ready to come out long before the vet tells you (usually 7 - 10 days.) Cats are able to decide when stitches come out (they also have dissolving stitches inside). In your case the knot the vet made to make the stitches stay in place may have had too long an end to it (which you could have gently cut off) and could have been sticking into your cats stomach (this happens a lot!) It's best to let the vet have a look to be sure there are not complications from an infection. If you can't afford a vet then use 1/4 cup of Epsom Salts (buy it at your drug store) pour a little boiling water in the cup to dissolve the crystal, then add tepid water. Put in a small dish and use a clean soft cloth and wet it and dab on the stitches and leave on gently for 20 seconds. Then repeat twice and do this 4 - 5 times a day. It should only take 2 days to see a difference. Epsom Salts makes the cat's tummy feel much better and it's also good for humans as far as sunburns, sore muscles, wounds.
