The giving of one tenth (This is called a Tithe) of ones earnings back to the Lord is to help build up the Kingdom of God, to feed the hungry and to give help to all those in need. Abraham paid tithes to Mechizadeck, who was the great High Priest at that time.

This tithe was not kept by Mechizadek but was used as the Lord saw fit.

It is my own testimony that whoever pays a tithe will in no way suffer but will have all that is required for them to live comfortable lives.

It is not difficult to pay one dollar out of ten, the hard part is to be able to willingly part with one hundred dollars from one thousand.

When did the first charities begin?

The Church, from the 1st century was involved in charitable activities. In the book of Acts, the first Christians sold what they had to help the poor and destitute, holding all things in common. Within a short time, it became such a large part of the Church's activities that the Eleven disciples of Jesus leading the Church in Jerusalem had to appoint deacons to oversee the charitable distributions because they had no time left themselves for preaching and spreading the Gospel. Throughout the subsequent 2000 years, the Church has always raised money for the disadvantaged, and so must be considered a charity. Many churches today have a legal charitable status, not that they have started charitable works, but are seeking to make official what they have been always doing.

People voluntarily give one-tenth of their money to a church or charitable. What do those people do then?

If they have done it out of the goodness of their heart then good for them and God will reward them in heaven. If they have done it so that people will say, "My what a nice person." Then that is all the reward they will get and should not expect God to reward them for it. If they have the receipts then when tax time comes around and they file for their taxes, they can list them as charitable contributions and take that amount off of their taxable income. When you give, give joyfully and not expecting a reward or praise. Give because you want to not because you have to.
