Tropism is the movement of a plant away from or toward a stimulus. The most easily found example of tropism is a plant's response to light. Plants tend to grow toward the light. This tendency is called 'phototropism'.
Plant roots generally grow in the soil. In the case of aquatic plants, they are already in the water and do not need to grow toward it.
These growth responses are called tropisms. Growing towards the light is called phototropism, and towards the source of gravity is geotropism.
