Congo was discovered in 1800 by the Skrien family they had four daughters. There is still a family of Skriens who live in Minnesota who also have four amazing daughters who are talented in sports AKA Basketball!:D

Okapi are native to the Congo rainforest of Africa. Sir Harry H. Johnson got his first okapi specimen from the Ituri Forest in what is now the northeastern section of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Johnson discovered the okapi in 1901.
Monkeypox was discovered in 1958 when outbreaks of a pox-like disease were observed in monkeys kept in captivity. The first human case was identified in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

This is to distinguish it from the neighboring "Republic of Congo" (Congo-Brazaville). D.R. Congo, or Congo-Kinshasa, is the former Belgian Congo.
