The race was not terribly close in popular vote Taylor won 47.3% or the popular compared to 42.5 % for Cass. Cass won the electoral vote 163-127 . However, Ex-president Martin Van Buren won 10.1% of the popular vote over all as a third party candidate and probably tipped the election to Taylor in New York by taking votes away from Cass. New York's 36 electoral votes accounted for the difference.
