By Definition of force

work = force X displacement

since the force depends upon the displacement which can either +ve, -ve or zero

so if any object is retarding mean there can be many possibilities

1. if the force is applied opposite to the direction of object then the work done is negative.

2. if the force is on same direction then the work done is positive.

in both the cases the displacement will be positive

THIS KIND OF FORCE IS CALLED RETARDED FORCE

A force applied to it in the direction opposite to its motion is.

What does a force in the opposite direction to the motion cause?

A force applied to a moving object in the opposite direction of its motion causes its velocity to decrease.

What must be applied to an object to change its motion or direction?

If an object is at rest, a force must be applied to accelerate it (start it moving).

Would a force have to be applied in the same or opposite direction to stop a moving ball?

The opposite direction. To stop a moving object requires an acceleration in the direction opposite its motion.

What kind of traction demonstrates by a vehicle not moving?

Gravity and no force being applied to the vehicle. Traction has nothing to do with it. It boils down to Newtons first law which states, "Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it".

Occurs when force is applied over a certain distance and motion is in the same direction as the force?

Work. The object doesn't have to be moving in the same direction as the force. If I'm pushing north and the object is moving northeast, then it has a componentof motion in the direction of my force, and I do work.

Can an object in motion if no external forces are acting on it?

yes. external forces ALTER an object's motion... but once it starts moving and has no external forces being applied on it, it will go in a straight line with constant velocity (Newton's 1st Law of Motion)

Why does a person standing in a bus move forward when the brakes are applied?

Inertia. A body in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an outside force. The motion of the bus is stopped by the brakes. The person inside keeps moving as it is not being braked.

What changes the direction of a force?

Force changes either the speed or the direction of motion, or both.

What does emotion and promotion have to do with motion?

I don't know what emotion has to do with motion, but promotion has to do with motion because you are moving (motion) forward (pro) in something if you get a promotion

What is the motion of moving ant?

transkatory motion

How are motion and acceleration different?

In Simple motion, there is no force being applied. The moving object moves in a straight line with constant velocity. In acceleration, there is a force applied. The object's velocity is changing. The first derivative of acceleration is velocity. The first derivative of velocity is distance. (Derivative is a calculus thing.)
